Dental Students

Looking for opportunities to help patients and gain professional experience in Dentistry? New Heights Clinic is the place for you. Healthcare students and residents can experience the rewards and challenges of serving the under-served in Christ’s name.

Dental Student Clinic

New Heights hosts a Student Clinic one Saturday a month, during most months of the School Year. This is an opportunity for students and residents to help needy patients, get additional experience, and provide dentistry in an encouraging environment. We provide extractions, fillings, and simple root canals for those who have an urgent need.

The students provide the care and assist each other, with supervision by the Dental Director or another dentist who has faculty status with the OHSU School of Dentistry. A lunch and discussion time are provided after patient care is completed, for those who can stay.

Up to five students come to each clinic, with at least two from the third or fourth year class. The Clinic environment encourages appropriate and compassionate dental and spiritual care.

Contact the Dental Director, Dr Bob Bruechert to get on the email notification list or to get more information.

Christian Medical & Dental Associations

Many of the staff of New Heights Clinic are active members in CMDA, which meets monthly, during the school year, at Drs Ann and Andy Tsen’s home, near OHSU. The first Wednesday evening of most months includes a meal, encouraging interaction with fellow students and graduates, and a speaker on a topic that is pertinent to those working in healthcare. CMDA has groups all over the nation and, with a strong focus on students and residents, has helpful resources through the local and national offices.

Through Global Health Outreach, CMDA provides excellent opportunities to do short-term missions in many places around the world. More information.

Locally you can contact CMDA area Director Michael McLaughlin or call, 503-522-1950. Or visit the National CMDA website.

If you are an OHSU medical student interested in being assigned to one of our physicians for OHSU’s Principles of Clinical Medicine (PCM) course, please send us an email.

Summer Dental Institute

The Summer Dental Institute is an opportunity for dental students, assistants, hygienists and dentists to experience the fun and challenge of working overseas with those in need, by providing dental service in Christ’s name. Our team serves for about two weeks during the Dental Student break each summer in Indonesia. Up to six people do village clinics in remote tribal areas of the highlands on Papua and in coastal villages on the island of Nusa Penida. We work under the leadership of an Indonesian physician assisting his ministry of training pastor/healthcare workers for the village churches. We provide dental care and training in oral health to people in these villages and the surrounding area. Bible study, prayer, and times of worship are integral elements of the experience. Dental students, grads, and related health care workers are welcome to apply for this life-changing opportunity. Preference is given to applicants from the Pacific NW.

Information on upcoming SDI trips is sent out in November of the year before the trip.

Contact the Dental Director, Dr Bob Bruechert to be notified of the trip or to get further information.
